Tri-Chapter Estate Planning Council Event-"Protecting the interests of minors in estate and trust matters"
Hosted by the Estate Planning Council of Mississauga
Following the success of last year’s Tri-Chapter event, the Estate Planning Council of Mississauga is pleased to host this year’s program in collaboration with the Estate Planning Councils of Halton and Hamilton.
We are pleased to welcome Andrew Sader, Senior Counsel in the Property Rights Department at the Office of the Children’s Lawyer (OCL), for what promises to be an informative and practical discussion about protecting the interests of minors in estate and trust matters.
Last year’s Tri-Chapter presentation explored the challenges families and professionals encounter when protecting and supporting aging family members. This year, we turn our attention to the other end of the generational spectrum: what happens when children and minor beneficiaries have interests that must be protected?
The Office of the Children’s Lawyer, a semi-independent branch within Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General, represents the interests of minors in certain court matters involving custody and access disputes, child protection, civil litigation, and estates and trusts.
Drawing upon more than 20 years of experience as counsel in the OCL’s Property Rights Department, Andrew will focus on estates and trusts and guardianship of property matters involving minors, using practical and real-life case examples, with identifying information removed, to illustrate how these issues arise and how the interests of minors are protected.
Andrew’s presentation will address:
• When and how the Children’s Lawyer becomes involved in estate and trust administration
• The Children’s Lawyer’s approach to administration bonds
• Distributions to minors
• Payment into court and guardianship of property matters
• Common will-drafting issues to consider
• Issues involving real property
The presentation will also provide practical insight for lawyers, accountants, financial and estate planners, executors, trustees and other professional advisors who may encounter minor beneficiaries when planning for, administering or advising on estates, trusts and other property interests.
